Grandpa’s Spicy Dill Tartar Sauce

Trader Joe’s got me strung on on their excellent Dill and Jalapeño Tartar Sauce and then discontinued it. Here is my own version. This is a hearty tartar sauce, not for sissies!







1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 Tbs dill pickle, chopped very small
2 Tbs “Tamed” Jalapeños
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, plus more to taste
1 tablespoon capers, chopped,
1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried dill
1/2 to 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt substitute and fresh ground black pepper


  1. Combine the mayonnaise, pickles, jalapeños, lemon juice, capers, dill and Worcestershire sauce in a small bowl and stir until well blended and creamy.
  2. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Taste then adjust with additional lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  3. For the best flavor, cover and store in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Keep, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for one week.
